Windows 10 update causes nasty Blue screen of death and more — What to do

More bugs in cumulative Windows 10 updates.

Many users have complained that the KB4565351 and KB4566782 updates for Windows 10 are causing performance issues, audio problems, and even the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), Windows Latest reports.

The update is designed to fix security issues in Windows 10, but it seems to be causing the worst for some machines. Many people had trouble trying to install the update, and those who were able to run the update reported other problems, including looping crashes.

When the installation fails, an error message appears stating that a file in the WinSXS folder cannot be found. This folder serves as a storage location for several system files and DLL files and should not be corrupted or destroyed.

Repeated attempts to install the Cumulative Security Update do not seem to succeed; the process starts but fails at some point.

"I get the same error with update KB4566782," explains one user on Reddit. "Using Windows Update, the upgrade downloads and installs slowly to about 44%, then jumps to 100% install and displays the following error. There was a problem installing the update, but we will try again later: (0x800f081f)". We have tried 4 or 5 times since yesterday, all with the same result."

Failed installations seem to cause the dreaded "blue screen of death" during installation and other problems such as endless boot loops and system freezes Microsoft support forums and Reddit have reported that the update Some users have noted that their PC's sound does not work after the installation is complete.

"I am using 1903 and was forced to update KB4569751 last night. One Reddit user wrote: "I am using 1903 and was forced to do the KB4569751 update last night. I use an audio interface (id14) to power my external speaker monitor. The interface software shows that it is not receiving any signals from Windows"

.

"When I open the sound control panel, the devices (Arctis 7 headset, webcam microphone, etc.) no longer appear. uninstalling the Realtek drivers and rebooting had no effect and trying to run a restore point did not work. It did not work."

Other users reported that their Windows 10 machines encountered other errors, including severe slowdowns and performance issues, even after the update was successfully installed.

"This update has rendered my computer unusable; Windows Explorer starts and then freezes. External hard drives are unusable. Startup freezes. All kinds of problems. I now have to spend hours erasing and reinstalling everything," one user wrote on a Microsoft forum.

The Windows 10 KB4565351 update was automatically installed on one of our machines (a 2018 HP Spectre x360 15) with no problems. So the installation error does not appear to be a global one, but a significant number of Windows 10 users seem to be affected.

Interestingly, Lenovo ThinkPad laptops using Hyper-V, Intel virtualization, or with Windows Sandbox enabled seem to be disproportionately affected by the problem.

Given the breadth and pervasiveness of these problems, if you are concerned about updating, we recommend turning off automatic Windows 10 updates until Microsoft investigates and fixes the update issue. This is not the most elegant solution to this problem.

If you are using a Lenovo ThinkPad, you may want to avoid Hyper-V, Intel virtualization, and Windows Sandbox for the time being.

Microsoft has not yet addressed these issues, but this may be because they are investigating before issuing a response. Therefore, it may be wise to avoid these updates if you are using a machine that cannot risk encountering the error by any means.

However, Windows 10 updates are increasingly causing problems for some users when they are pushed out. Therefore, until Microsoft smooths out the process of regular updates, it may be desirable to have more manual control over updates to the operating system.
