How to watch Lovecraft Country Online: HBO Release Date, Trailer, review, Details

Tonight, horror fans will want to watch "Lovecraft Country" on HBO and HBO Max. This new horror series, from executive producers Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams, will feature very realistic depictions of supernatural terror.

Like its HBO sibling, "Watchmen," "Lovecraft Country" is about racism. The show is set in the racially segregated Jim Crow era of 1950s America, where characters face monsters of all kinds, from the supernatural to the racist and human.

Lovecraft Country centers on Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors), who takes a road trip with his friend Leticia (Journey Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to search for his missing father. Along the way, they encounter vampire-like creatures and menacing police officers. The show balances a fantastic story with the (still) dangerous reality of being black.

The show is based on Matt Ruff's novel of the same name, which was inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's horrific tale. The program admits that Lovecraft himself was a racist.

Here's everything you need to know about how to watch "Lovecraft Country" on HBO and HBO Max.

Just because HBO and HBO Max aren't available everywhere doesn't mean you have to miss "Lovecraft Country" when you're away from home. It's very easy to watch it along with the rest of the Internet. With the right VPN (Virtual Private Network), you can stream the show wherever you are.

We evaluated many options and the best VPN is ExpressVPN. It meets the VPN needs of many users and offers excellent compatibility with most devices and great connection speeds. It is also reasonably priced at $12.95/month. (The cost drops even further if you sign up for a long-term contract of 6 months or a year.)

The first episode of "Lovecraft Country" is available on demand on HBO and is currently streaming on HBO Max.

"Lovecraft Country" airs every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET.

HBO Max is available on Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, Android, Android TV, Chromecast, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Samsung TV from 2016.

The first episode of Lovecraft Country is available for free without an HBO or HBO Max subscription; check it out on YouTube or HBO.com.

"Lovecraft Country" will air on HBO Canada. However, HBO Max is not available in the country, so ExpressVPN is required if you subscribe to the service.

Good news for Brits. Lovecraft Country will air weekly on Sky Atlantic and NowTV streaming services.

NowTV will offer a 7-day free trial, after which it will cost £8.99 per month.

The trailer for Lovecraft Country begins with Atticus describing the book he is reading (an allusion to author H.P. Lovecraft. ) "It's about a hero who goes on an adventure, defeats monsters, and saves the day," he says. And that is the fantastic journey he is about to embark on.

A roundup of reviews of Lovecraft Country:

The New York Times: "The characters and story are engaging, and the production has a dreamy but vivid feel that hints at Lovecraft's seductive quality but avoids his florid excesses.

Entertainment Weekly: But in its first five episodes, "Lovecraft Country" is full of supernatural clichés and unscary jump scares, CG thrills and TV-MA goofy sex scenes (over the sink, on the stairs, in the car.)

AV Club "Lovecraft Country" is an utterly imaginative and ridiculous ride, but not as ridiculous as the pointless eccentricity that makes the series necessary.

CNN: "The show cleverly plays with the conventions of the genre while employing more familiar tricks--like the charming twist that concludes the episode, designed to draw viewers into the next hour. "

[1] The Hollywood Reporter: "'Lovecraft Country,' which celebrates and revises the pulp-in-pulp legacy of pulp fiction, proudly resists comfort, zigzags abruptly whenever it seems certain where it is zigzagging, a past that is never distant and forces the audience to suspend their amusement for periodic confrontations with nightmares that are difficult to relegate to the realm of fiction.
