Stimulus check 2 can be delayed until 9 months — this is what we know

Negotiations over the next stimulus package have stalled with no plans to resume.

While all sides generally agree on the need for a second $1,200 check, Democratic lawmakers and White House officials are at odds over several bailout packages, a stalemate that could last several weeks at worst.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who is negotiating for the White House, has said the administration is willing to provide more funding and pass a partial bailout, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) reports that the two sides are "miles apart."

If the bill passes, the IRS is poised to send the stimulus checks2 much more quickly than the first payment under the CARES Act in March. If all parties reach an agreement by Friday, the IRS could reportedly process the first check by the end of August. [However, this scenario is becoming increasingly unlikely, as no quick compromise has been promised and lawmakers must return to Washington for a vote. If negotiations fail to come to an agreement or drag on for weeks, the date for issuing the stimulus checks will continue to be postponed.

Americans could receive an additional $1,200 check if they qualify for relief under the CARES Act.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Democratic HEROES Act in May, which provides $1,200 to single people earning less than $75,000 a year and married people earning less than $150,000 a year. They would receive up to $99,000 and $198,000, respectively, on a pro-rated basis. The bill also provides $1,200 for dependents regardless of age, with a maximum of $6,000 per family.

The HEALS Act, proposed by Senate Republicans, would keep the same eligibility requirements and amounts for taxpayers, but would reduce benefits to dependents to $500. However, it would expand benefits to include dependents over the age of 16, such as college students and disabled adults, and would not cap the total amount a household receives.

Enter your tax information into this stimulus check 2 calculator to see how much you can get under the HEALS Act and use this stimulus check calculator under the HEROES Act.

Most checks paid under the CARES Act have been sent out, but if you have not received your benefits and believe you are eligible, you can check your status using the IRS Get My Payment app or call a representative at the IRS stimulus check phone number.
