Eel launches eclectic scooter rental service forド34 a month

Unagi makes what we think is the best electric scooter overall, but there's a catch: its scooter, the Unagi One, costs $990. To make its scooters more accessible, Unagi is launching a scooter rental service starting at $34 per month.

Eel will launch its scooter rental service in New York and Los Angeles. Upon signing up for the service ($34/month for an annual subscription, $39/month for a month-to-month subscription, plus a $50 setup fee), a pre-assembled scooter will be hand-delivered to your door within 24 hours and a representative will give you a brief tutorial.

There is an $85 deductible for lost, stolen, or damaged scooters, and you receive a replacement within 24 hours. At the end of the rental, someone will pick up the scooter.

Unagi Model One reviewers liked the scooter's smooth lines and light weight, which makes it easy to get up and down stairs; the 500-watt motor also has enough power to get up hills at a moderate speed.

Eel Rentals users do not get to choose the color of the scooter they rent, and there is no guarantee that the scooter is brand new. However, according to a company representative, Unagi has stockpiled inventory in anticipation of the launch, so most people who sign up at launch will get a brand new scooter. [Unagi's rental program could be a good alternative to electric scooter ride-share programs such as Lime, Lyft, and Bird. Also, given that rideshare programs are not allowed in most of New York City, it could be a good option for those who do not want to use mass transit but do not want to pay for an electric scooter.
