RIP Pixel5XL: Google App Update Confirms Bad News

If you were hoping against hope that Google would release the Pixel 5 XL along with the Pixel 5 this fall, consider your hopes dashed. And it was Google that dealt the latest blow.

Google, of course, has not officially announced anything about its plans for the Pixel 5. Instead, it has announced software updates. And while the camera app update included in the latest Android 11 beta lists Pixel phones that will be able to run the updated software, the Pixel 5 XL is not on that list.

Credit to 9to5Google for this detective work in digging into the Google Camera 7.5 update to see what's coming to Google's camera app; the Pixel 5 is mentioned in the app, as are the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a XL, seems to confirm that all of these models will ship this year. Similarly, the absence of the Pixel 5 XL seems to confirm that it is MIA.

Despite the occasional Pixel 5 XL renderings surfacing, there have long been rumors that Google is on the chopping block for a larger Pixel. Instead, the latest buzz suggests that a 5G version of the Pixel 4a will join the Pixel 5 later this fall. (Of course, for that scenario to come to fruition, we would have to see the Pixel 4a first, and its rumored launch continues to be delayed.)

The Camera 7.5 update also contains hints of new features coming to Pixel phones, including Google's upcoming release. Found in the update is Motion Blur mode, which joins other camera modes such as Night Sight and Portrait. Motion Blur appears to allow users to focus on a specific subject, even if it is moving. Consider photos of sports or other activities where the person being photographed is not completely still.

The audio zoom feature in the Camera 7.5 update sounds like you'll be able to direct the phone's microphone when shooting video to home in on who you've zoomed in on. Other features spotted by 9to5Google include an adjustable camera flash and the ability to share videos more easily. The latter feature expands on the functionality that already exists with still images, which allows users to share their latest shots to various social media sites and services by tapping a button in the viewfinder. 25 services are listed in the Camera 7.5 update that will allow for quick video sharing. that will allow for rapid video sharing.

The Google Pixel 4a is said to be available on August 3, which means that Google's next big phone is just a few days away from being revealed; those waiting for the Pixel 5 will have to hold out until the fall, when the Pixel 4a is expected to be released on August 3.
