AMD Big Navi leak makes Nvidia RTX3080Ti look better

AMD Big Navi may not be the Nvidia killer some are hoping for. According to a new leak, AMD's next graphics card may be only a small step up and may not live up to what is expected to be the very powerful Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti.

The leak comes from Coreteks (via TechRadar), citing Asian sources, and Big Navi's performance will reportedly rival the Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti, the most powerful of Nvidia's current generation GPUs. AMD has told its partners that Big Navi will deliver at most a 15% performance improvement over the RTX 2080 Ti, and this is for titles optimized for AMD graphics cards.

This would mean that Big Navi would be competing directly with the standard Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, rather than the high-end RTX 3080 Ti as many had hoped. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a bit underwhelming considering that previous leaks indicated that Big Navi would be up to 50-percent faster than the current 2080 Ti.

Coreteks' report also suggests that there may be two Big Navi models available at launch, like the AMD Radeon RX 5700XT and RX 5700 released last year; AMD is also developing a "Navy Flounder" for early 2021 It is expected to be a mid-range model, which could compete with Nvidia's successor, the RTX 2060, which has been suggested to be a mid-range model.

The AMD Big Navi is currently being touted for a September reveal and a possible October 7 release. This is the same time that Nvidia will unveil the GeForce RTX 3080 and 3080 Ti, and leaked benchmarks suggest that the former could be up to 21% more powerful than Nvidia's professional-grade RTX Titan cards.

AMD is reportedly aiming to undercut Nvidia in price for its next-generation graphics cards, which could give Big Navi an edge despite not having true Nvidia-killing performance. With only a few weeks left until the launch of these two major GPUs, expect more leaks and rumors to surface until then.
