iPhone and iPad users are getting a perk that Android phone owners have enjoyed for almost a year: automatic phone backup to Google One.

At least for paid subscribers of Google's cloud storage service, it has been available on the Android side since September 2019. According to the blog post, iOS users who are paid subscribers of Google One will be able to do the same. A new Google One app to be released soon will offer this feature, and backups will be free even if you do not subscribe to Google's service.

It is easy to see why this has become a big issue. Our smartphones have become storage lockers for countless photos, songs, movies, and messages. Even if you bought a high-capacity version of your favorite flagship device, you might find yourself running out of space from time to time. When that happens, services like Google One can come to your rescue.

When the new Google One mobile app is released, iOS users simply download the app and sign in with a valid Google account. From there, they will back up their photos, text messages, contacts, and emails to Google's cloud storage service.

In addition, Google makes it easy to sort these files with its new Storage Manager feature. Available in both the desktop and mobile apps, this tool allows users to easily check how much free storage is left and add or remove files without exiting the app. Users with free storage will also have the option to lock upgrades via the manager.

With storage limited to 15GB, having a reliable and easy way to move files around is especially useful for free Google One users. For those who need a little more space to play around with, there are paid plans starting at $1.99/month. Comparatively, Apple's iCloud service offers only 5 GB of free space.

In addition, subscribers to Google One's paid plans can share their plan with up to five other users through family sharing and receive premium customer support. In some regions, users can receive discounts and special offers, as well as special bonus credits that can be used in the Play Store, depending on where the user lives.

As for the new Google One app, it is available right now from Google Play for Android users, but iPhone storage enthusiasts will have to wait a bit longer. Currently, no release date has been set other than "coming soon." At the very least, it should give us enough time to start sorting through what should be stored in cloud storage and what should go in the trash.
