Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 leak reveals three big upgrades

New renderings of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 have leaked online. [This image was obtained by MySmartPrice, (via Ishan Agarwal) from a "reliable source."

The two colors we can see here are named Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black by Samsung, and both really suit the phone. Samsung certainly seems keen on this color, as it offers the same color on the Galaxy Note 20.

The phone's front cover features a 6.23-inch display, which is significantly larger than the 4.6-inch external display on the original Galaxy Fold. To position the camera up front without the need for a huge bezel, the Z Fold 2 uses a punch-hole notch.

From the back, one can see the power button on the side of the phone, which appears to have another capacitive fingerprint sensor. Given the difficulty of manufacturing foldable cell phones, it seems unlikely that this device will have an under-display fingerprint sensor.

The rear camera block appears to include three sensors and a flash. According to other rumors, these cameras will be a 12MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 64MP telephoto sensor. This is the same camera found on the Galaxy S20, which is solid for a photo phone, but not as good as the iPhone 11 or Samsung's more expensive Galaxy S20 Plus.

Connecting the two halves is what appears to be a curved hinge, which looks much smoother than the Galaxy Fold's angular hinge. Since the original Fold had trouble keeping debris from getting into the internal mechanism and causing significant damage to the phone, Samsung seems to have gone some way to solving this problem with a different hinge design.

Inside the phone, on the right side of the display, there is a punch hole selfie camera. It's a little hard to find, but if anything that's a good thing. Compared to the huge notch on the original Galaxy Fold, the punch hole makes the Z Fold 2 look like any other modern Android phone.

The internal display bezel also appears to have shrunk compared to the first Fold. This would have allowed Samsung to expand the display from 7.3" to 7.7". Rumors also suggest that Samsung is giving this larger display a smooth 120 Hz refresh rate.

There is no sign of an S Pen in these renderings, and despite some rumors suggesting that the Fold 2 could have a Note-style pen, the fact that there is no S Pen in these renderings seems to confirm that Samsung will not offer a stylus with the Z Fold 2 It seems to confirm that it will not.

Internally, the Z Fold 2 is expected to feature a Snapdragon 865 chipset and 12GB RAM, with 256GB or 512GB of storage. Battery capacity is 4,356 mAh, with two batteries and 5G support thanks to the Snapdragon silicon. The price is expected to be around $2,000 like the original Galaxy Fold.

It seems like we've seen almost everything from the Galaxy Z Fold 2, but on August 5, the day of Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event, we'll see the official announcement of this foldable: the Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Buds Live, Galaxy Tab S7, plus the Galaxy Note 20 series will also debut at this time.
