Beyoncé: Black is King serves as a visual companion to The Lion King: The album is a tie-in album Beyoncé planned for Disney's 2019 remake of The Lion King. Beyoncé voiced Nala in the hit movie. The film follows the young king's journey through betrayal, love, and self-identity with the help of his ancestors.

According to Disney, "This visual album by Beyoncé reimagines the lessons of The Lion King for today's young kings and queens seeking their own crown." Black is King is a celebratory memoir about the black experience, highlighting black voices, traditions, and culture.

Beyoncé: Black is King includes Jay-Z, Destiny's Child vocalist Kelly Rowland, Pharrell Williams, Tina Knowles-Lawson, Lupita Nyongo, Naomi Campbell, model Aweng Ade Chuaor and Adut Akesh, and musicians from the album The Gift.
