The iPhone12 leak reveals the battery size of all models - and it's a big step back

In case you missed it in the chatter surrounding iPhone 12 pricing this week, the same leaker who suggested that the new iPhone 12 Pro model will cost more than its iPhone 11 counterpart also introduced the potential battery size of the new phone. Spoiler alert: expect less battery for your money.

Specifically, Twitter leaker @komiya_kj lists the battery sizes for all four iPhone 12 models; not only do all four models have less battery capacity than their predecessors, but the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra's leaked batteries are significantly lower.

As you might expect, the new 5.4-inch iPhone 12 has the smallest battery at 2,227 mAh. According to a tipster, the iPhone 12 Max battery is 2,815 mAh, and the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max should have power packs of 2,775 mAH and 3,687 mAh, respectively.

These numbers contain some curious things, starting with the fact that the iPhone 12 Max and iPhone 12 Pro have different sized batteries, even though both are expected to have 6.1-inch screens. Even more shocking, if the leak is correct, the more expensive Pro model will have a smaller battery than the iPhone 12 Max.

It is no mean feat for Apple to put a smaller battery in one of its Pro iPhones. iPhone 11 Pro has the smallest battery of the three models Apple released last fall, but it is also the smallest of these models with a 5.8-inch screen It is also the most compact of the three models.

There is a perfectly reasonable explanation for the iPhone 12 Max iPhone 12 Pro battery differences, @komiya_kj said in a follow-up tweet. the camera module in the Pro module is larger due to a third lens and possibly a LiDAR sensor. and therefore larger. Theoretically, there would be less space for a battery.

In terms of battery size, Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 should have an advantage over the iPhone 12. Leaked information suggests that the regular 6.4-inch Galaxy Note 20 will have a 4,000 mAh battery, while the larger 6.9-inch Galaxy Note 20 Ultra may have a 4,500 mAh battery.

This is a significant difference between the iPhone 12's battery and the Galaxy Note 20's size. However, battery capacity is only one aspect of power usage. For example, the A14 Bionic processor (5nm based) process is said to be 30% more efficient than the A13 Bionic chip.

We put the Note 20 and iPhone 12 lineups through our web-surfing battery tests and declare a true winner.

Another thing to notice is that the battery in the iPhone 12 is overall smaller than the ones in Apple's current iPhone lineup. While Apple will not officially announce the battery size, a teardown of the iPhone 11 model reveals that the iPhone 11 has a 3,110 mAh power pack, while the iPhone 11 Pro has a smaller 3,046 mAh battery The iPhone 11 Pro Max tops the list with a 3,969 mAh battery.

If @komiya_kj's tweet is accurate, only the iPhone 12 Pro Max's battery exceeds 3,000 mAh.

Of course, there is more to power management than battery size, and Apple is expected to use a 5-nanometer A14 Bionic chip to power its phones this fall. This chip is likely to be more power efficient than the 7-nanometer A13 in the iPhone 11 lineup, so Apple may have been willing to use a smaller battery to save internal space in the upcoming handset.

This is not the first time we have heard rumors that Apple will use a smaller battery for the iPhone 12 model. Earlier this month, a similar rumor surfaced suggesting a smaller iPhone 12 battery. Of course, that rumor by MySmartPrice indicated that the iPhone 12 Max and iPhone 12 Pro would have identical 2,775 mAh power packs.

It will be some time before we know if either battery rumor is more accurate or if the iPhone 12 battery is smaller. The most recent reports indicate that the iPhone 12 will be unveiled at an event on September 8, but it may not be released until October.
