Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 leak reveals name and major design changes

This may be the first time we've seen Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 2 in live action.

One live image of the new foldable was posted by Twitter user hwangmh01, which was retweeted by noted leaker Max Weinbach.

The first thing you notice is that the leak confirms the device's rather long name. The public has long referred to the follow-up to Samsung's Galaxy Fold as the Galaxy Fold 2, but Samsung has apparently decided to add a "Z" in the middle, and since it first appeared on the Galaxy Z Flip, it will probably be used as the identifying letter for all future Samsung foldable phones in the future.

It is difficult to ascertain too many physical details beyond the general shape of the Z Flip's clamshell folding design, which remains bookfold rather than clamshell. The phone appears to have a punch-hole front camera, which is a notable change from the slight notch seen on the original model. Perhaps it is the light, but the bezels appear to be very thin, at least compared to the original Galaxy Fold. That said, the rumored 7.7-inch, 120Hz built-in display should look great.

We would like to know if the other rumors we have heard about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 are also true. Apparently there will be a 6.23-inch front display and, although not visible in this image, a triple rear camera on the other side of the phone. These cameras appear to be the same as those on the Galaxy S20, which is a combo of a 12MP wide, 16MP ultra-wide, and 64MP telephoto camera.

The other two cameras are embedded in the front and internal displays and are 10MP selfie cameras. The internal camera is believed to be hidden in a punch hole notch this time, which will make the large display seem even larger.

Inside the Z Fold 2 should be a Snapdragon 865 chipset, which will provide flagship-level performance and 5G compatibility. As for memory, it is rumored to have 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage capacity, with 512GB of storage possibly available as an option.

The truth will be revealed by Samsung next week on August 5, the day of the Galaxy Unpacked showcase. The event is also expected to feature the Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Tab S7, and Galaxy Buds Live, as well as Samsung's other big smartphone for this fall, the Galaxy Note 20.
