Moto Razr2 Leak Reveals Motorola's Answer to Galaxy Z Flip5G

Earlier this year, Motorola's Razr began shipping with a rather lukewarm reception. The flip phone with its foldable screen may have appealed to the nostalgia of some users, but the finished product could not justify the $1500 price tag.

Now Motorola seems ready to get in the ring again with a 5G successor to the 2019 Razr for 2020. Blogger and cell phone leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter) posted a look at what appears to be the Moto Razr 2. This first glimpse is not exactly crisp, but definitely indicates that something very interesting is about to happen.

The 5G Razr successor, codenamed "Motorola Odyssey," appears to share some similarities with the previous foldable Razr, but also some differences. While the overall size appears to be much the same, the internal display is larger than the 6.2-inch OLED panel on the previous model, and the bezels appear to be thinner.

The phone's chin also appears to have been slimmed down considerably, and the removal of the capacitive fingerprint scanner that was part of the previous Motorola Razr is eye-catching. The sensor may have simply been relocated, though.

As for the external display that appears when the phone is folded, one can see a camera setup ready to take some pictures. While this square-like presentation does not appear to be getting any larger, the new Raz camera is rumored to include a 48-megapixel primary sensor as well as a second 20-megapixel lens on the side of the visible camera bump.

The Motorola Razr 5G's internals will also be of interest, given how underpowered the original was. Allegedly, the phone will feature a Snapdragon 765 chipset to keep the price down a bit, 256B of internal storage and 8GB of RAM. As for battery life, the Razr 5G will feature a larger 2,845mAh battery, which is poised to help extend the device's talk time and usage time. It could also include 18W charging and support for nano SIM cards, if the rumors are true.

Frankly, a larger battery is the best news. The original Razr lasted only 6 hours in Tom's Guide battery tests, and if this new version has 5G connectivity, it will need a larger power pack.

Prior industry rumors suggest that the Motorola Razr 5G could be released internationally this September, with a Q4 launch. Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but could start around $1,400 given its features.

The Motorola Razr 5G will not be the first 5G foldable phone unless it comes out very soon. Samsung has already announced the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, a follow-up to its previous flip phone. This $1,449 handset will ship on August 7.
