The price of the MacBook arms just leaked - and they are shockingly cheap

Tom's Guide has been discussing the price of the ARM MacBook, but apparently we weren't thinking cheap enough. According to a new leak, the first ARM MacBook and MacBook Pro will be Apple's cheapest laptops in years.

The news comes from @Komiya_jp, a leaker who just recently spit out Apple's entire Fall 2020 product release schedule. According to them, the first ARM MacBook will be priced at $799, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro to be released at the same time (presumably with Apple Silicon as well) will be $1099.

As if to indicate that these figures are neither perfect nor set in stone, Komiya put a "~" mark next to each price and added the note "(*not sure about the exact price)."

However, these prices are $200 off each of the current Intel MacBook Air ($999) and 13-inch MacBook Pro ($1,299) prices. If true, Apple would no doubt find it much cheaper to manufacture its own A-series Apple silicon chips than to purchase A-series Apple silicon chips from Intel.

This price drop has implications beyond the fact that Apple is manufacturing its own chips. Apple will want to make a big rollout of the Apple Silicon a huge success, and lowering the price of the laptop is a way to attract a lot of attention, which would be appreciated at the existing Mac selling price.

It would also be stepping into an area that Apple hasn't played with for years: the sub-$800 MacBook.

However, I still wonder why Komiya mentions the ARM MacBook without mentioning the Air brand, and refers to the other model as the MacBook Pro. Apple has been working on a variation of the Apple Silicon chip for laptops for It has been suggested that Apple will use as few as possible, perhaps only one for the 13-inch MacBook and several for the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The ARM MacBook could be a major redesign of Apple's existing MacBook Air or a rebirth of the (possibly) discontinued 12-inch MacBook. And now there is more evidence pointing to this possibility.

Wccftech reports leaked information about the 12-inch MacBook battery. This battery will have a capacity of 4,380 mAh, or 49.9 WHr. This is the same capacity as the current MacBook Air. The leak came from @the_tech_guy on Twitter, and according to @komiya_kj, this is for the Apple Silicon MacBook 2020.

The MacBook Air with Intel processors lasted a very long 9 hours and 31 minutes in a web surfing battery test. Thus, an ARM-based Mac with Apple Silicon would be expected to have a much longer runtime.

In any case, the ARM MacBook is expected to have better battery life than the current MacBook and will likely be faster than the previous Intel chipset. Compatibility issues are said to be a non-issue thanks to Rosetta 2 emulation.
