According to serial technology leaker Jon Prosser, Apple's iMac 2020 could be revealed in August. However, it will not have a new look or feature Apple's ARM-based custom chips.

Prosser, who is no stranger to Apple insider knowledge, tweeted that despite rumors that the new iMac would appear this week, it would appear in August. He clarified, however, that it will not feature Apple SIlicon (Cupertino's in-house chip initiative), nor will it feature the new all-in-one design that had been hinted at earlier.

Rather, the new iMac will simply get refreshed specs, possibly with a 10th generation Intel Core processor and perhaps some enhanced graphics options. This is not a big surprise, as Apple is expected to use a new ARM-based custom chip in its new MacBook Pro machines this year, not unlike the one used in the iPad Pro 2020.

And when Apple decides to fully redesign the iMac, it is expected to move away from Intel processors in desktop machines. Supporting this prediction and Prosser's claim is a tweet from another technology leaker called Jioriku, who also claims that the next iMac will not be a redesigned machine.

In other words, given this, we are likely to see the familiar iMac in the coming weeks, only specced up to 2020 standards. We suspect that Apple will do this quietly with a small site update rather than a big announcement.

Things may change in 2021 when Apple comes into its own with its own ARM-based chips. Only then can we expect to see a redesigned iMac. Rumors and rendered images suggest that such a machine will feature a rather intriguing all-in-one design, with the keyboard built into the machine.

How practical and therefore how likely such a design would be is a matter of speculation. However, 2021 will be an interesting year for Mac machines in general. This is because it is the time when Apple will begin to break away from Intel chips with a vengeance. Early benchmark leaks indicate that the Apple Silicon could perform well enough.
