The Oculus Quest2 release date has just been leaked — here's when it comes

A few days ago we got our first glimpse of the upcoming Oculus Quest. And now the sequel to the best VR headset ever has a release date of September 15.

This is from Twitter leaker WalkingCat, who posted another photo of the headset with this date as the caption.

So what can we learn from these photos, it doesn't look like Oculus is planning to reinvent the wheel. At first glance, aside from the new white and black colors, there is little difference between the two headsets. But there are definitely changes, some more welcome than others.

First, it appears to be a bit slimmer and lighter than the previous version. Objectively this is a good thing, since the heavier a headset gets, the more uncomfortable it becomes to wear for extended periods of time.

Further images of what appears to be an early production unit were leaked to Reddit. [The strap appears to have been changed to something completely different, with the Velcro eliminated. The built-in camera for tracking also appears to have been lowered. Assuming this is for better tracking, it is hard to argue that it is not a good thing, given that aesthetically there is little difference.

However, there is one small alarming change. The original Oculus Quest had an IDP (interpupillary distance) slider on the bottom of the headset, but this time it is nowhere to be found; the IDP was there to improve the owner's experience by allowing the distance between the lenses to be adjusted, so its absence here is a bit worrisome.

This could mean that Quest 2 will switch from dual displays to a single screen as seen on the Oculus Rift 2. This may sound like a downgrade given the contrast implications, but it could help improve the 72 Hz refresh rate on the current generation Quest.

The WalkingCat image appears to be a press shot, suggesting that an official launch is imminent. We expect it to be ready in time for the Oculus Connect developer conference, but thanks to the current world situation, no official date has been given just nailed down "later this year" for the digital-only event.
