The Oculus Quest is one of the most accessible virtual reality headsets available. It is affordable, easy to set up, and a reliable option for those who want to get into this space without having to buy a complicated gaming PC or make room in their living room.

It is also an incredibly popular option in the world of virtual reality headsets, so it is not surprising that Oculus is reportedly working on a second version called the Oculus Quest 2. Now, thanks to what are purported to be images of the product posted on social media, it seems we have our first real look at what the second version of the headset will look like.

The leaked image, shared via Twitter by typically reliable leaker WalkingCat, shows a nearly white headset design with black trim, similar to the trend seen on Sony's upcoming PS5. This image of the Quest 2 also shows a plastic strap to hold the headset in place, but it does not appear to be well padded. The headset also appears to be severely lacking a slider or similar control, either on the bottom or somewhere on the side, which is to be expected.

Currently, the Oculus Quest has an interpupillary distance slider that can be used to change the distance between the lenses. This helps to bring the unit's image into better focus for those whose eyes are closer or further away than the average user. This is a feature that was removed from the Oculus Rift S and, if removed, may cause controversy among Quest 2 adopters.

According to leaked images, the rumored headset appears to be less bulky and smaller overall, although it is difficult to judge from just this one image. The camera appears to be positioned lower on the device than its predecessor, which may mean that it allows for a wider range of motion. These are all positive changes, but without an official announcement or statement from Oculus, it is impossible to say for sure.

We first learned in May that Facebook may be working on a new virtual reality headset with a redesigned controller, but updates have been relatively scarce since then; Bloomberg reported at the time that the new version would be 15% lighter than the processor and would include a screen refresh rate as high as 90H compared to the 60Hz of the first version, Bloomberg reported.

It has only been about a year since the Oculus Quest first debuted, and Nikkei Asian Review reports that Oculus may begin production of a new headset (or what is depicted in the latest leaks) by the end of this month. If true, this would mean that an announcement of the next Quest is imminent. This is a good time to debut new hardware. Especially when a new generation of consoles is just around the corner that could bring stiff competition in the gaming arena. Unfortunately, Oculus has remained tight-lipped about the situation, so it's all speculation at this point.
