Prime Day Is Late: Amazon Makes It Official

Ever since COVID-19 made life particularly complicated and delivery increasingly difficult, Amazon Prime Day, the annual online summer blockbuster, was expected to be postponed or cancelled. Today (July 21), Amazon made it official.

In a statement released by Tech Crunch, an Amazon spokesperson said, "This year, we will hold Prime Day later than in previous years while ensuring the safety of our employees and supporting our customers and sales partners." This comment about the safety of employees who will be working overtime to fulfill all orders on Prime Day means all the world when it comes to social distancing.

Since February 2020, we have heard rumors about Prime Day being postponed or cancelled.

As for when Prime Day will be in 2020? We have heard rumors that the festivities may take place this October, following back-to-school shopping and prior to holiday shopping. Specifically, Business Insider (subscription required) reported that an internal Amazon email advised sellers to mark the week of October 5.

In April, however, we learned that Amazon was not necessarily hurt during the pandemic. In fact, demand was so high that Amazon hired an additional 75,000 employees just for daily necessities and pandemic-related goods to meet the demand of shoppers who spent more time indoors than ever before. On top of that, an additional 100,000 people were hired in distribution centers to deliver supplies.

An Amazon representative also said that India will host its own Prime Day on August 6 and 7, starting at midnight on the 6th.
