Microsoft's roadmap to a dual-screen future for Windows 10X and the Surface Neo looks very bumpy. Not only should we not expect a new OS this year, but it will be screen shy when it finally launches, according to a new report.

According to ZDNet, which claims to have heard "Microsoft's latest plans" for Windows 10X, Windows 10X will debut on single-screen devices in spring 2021. Yes, not only will Windows 10X miss its original fall 2020 release date, but it will only be available on more traditional devices.

We had already heard that Windows 10X would be delayed to 2021, but this late rollout of the full version is underwhelming at best. Apparently, Microsoft is more focused on Teams, its group collaboration service; we were told that Surface Neo would also be delayed to 2021, but with this news, it looks like we'll have to wait much longer.

This is because the ZDNet report has a note claiming that spring 2022 is the window for a full release of Windows 10X on "additional single-screen and dual-screen devices" (which sounds like the Neo).

Let's go back to the first Windows 10X device. These devices will be "designed primarily for enterprise (especially front-line workers) and education" and will be like the HoloLens in that the general public will have to wait to get their hands on Microsoft's semi-futuristic technology.

Oh, and there is another major drawback to early Windows 10X devices. This could be a major problem for the aforementioned companies, as they often use legacy software.

Without Win32 support, 32-bit legacy software will not run on Windows 10X devices. This is a problem Microsoft has already encountered with the Surface Pro X and would not want to have such compatibility issues when it comes to consumer grade Windows 10X devices.
