Samsung Galaxy Note 20 could be the ultimate gaming Phone — Here's why

Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 could be the secret gaming phone powerhouse that could beat the likes of the Asus ROG Phone 3.

This is according to a tweet posted by Samsung, which says that the Galaxy Note 20, which will be unveiled at the company's Unpacked event on August 5, has the "power to play from anywhere." And in the accompanying video, the copper-colored metallic blob morphs into a D-pad and four buttons, in a layout that one would expect to see as a game controller.

Thus, it is safe to assume that Samsung is referring to gaming, not music or video playback. So what gaming-oriented features can we expect from Samsung's Galaxy Note 20? From the leaks and rumors so far, we have some good ideas.

For starters, the Galaxy Note 20 will be powered by Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 Plus chip.

This is the same chip that the Asus ROG Phone 3 and Lenovo Legion gaming smartphone are expected to feature, and the Galaxy Note 20 will feature a slice of silicon that promises to make performance-demanding mobile gaming easy to digest It will be the first of its kind. Qualcomm says the clock speed will be 10% faster than the Snapdragon 865, reaching 3.1GHz. The Adreno GPU should also be able to render graphics 10% faster than the previous model.

Given that the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will have up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage space, it will have solid hardware to support the Snapdragon chip. In addition, the Galaxy Note 20 has a 4,300 mAh battery and the Note 20 Ultra has a 5,000 mAh battery, and Samsung may be showing that their flagship models have the battery life to withstand long gaming sessions.

Gaming phones tend to have high refresh rate displays, and the Lenovo Legion will have a 144 Hz panel; the Note 20 Ultra is expected to have a 120 Hz refresh rate display, which is not as fast. However, Samsung's device will feature an LTPO panel that dynamically scales the refresh rate from 120Hz to 1Hz. This should help battery life if the Note 20 Ultra is not running graphics-intensive apps.

In any case, the 120Hz refresh rate will give the Note 20 Ultra a very capable display for high frame rate gaming. The maximum refresh rate for the regular Note 20 is expected to be 60 Hz. However, with screen sizes of 6.42" and 6.87" for the Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, respectively, both models will have vast displays for mobile gaming.

Perhaps Samsung believes that 5G connectivity will facilitate the power to play anywhere. Smooth, fast online gaming is one of the things used to propel 5G. Therefore, the Note 20's high-speed connectivity combined with its other specs could make it an even more powerful gaming phone.

Samsung may release a dedicated mobile gaming device that takes advantage of 5G. After all, Fortnite first launched on Android phones with the Galaxy Note 9 a few years ago. As such, we may see a tie-in with Fortnite on the Galaxy Note 20.

According to leaks of the Galaxy Note 20's design, it is unlikely that it will have built-in game controls like "Air Trigger". The rise of game streaming services like Microsoft's Project xCloud and Google Stadia have made such accessories more prevalent.

Alternatively, the S Pen could have gaming capabilities, allowing users to control games by tracking their movements with the S Pen, much like the Joy-Con controllers on the Nintendo Switch. If nothing else, the Galaxy Note 20 phone could feature an improved game mode, like the OnePlus 8 Pro, that reduces background processes and improves game-specific performance.

Current Galaxy phones have a game launcher system that allows you to block notifications, capture game footage, and replace in-game soundtracks with your own songs. So we see an upgrade coming.

We will find out on August 5 what Samsung has planned. Other technologies will also be announced at the Unpacked event, including the Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Galaxy Fold 2, Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Watch 3, etc.
