Specifications for the Oneplus Nord key were revealed shortly before launch

OnePlus has revealed specifications for the OnePlus Nord's display and rear camera, teasing a phone that could potentially trump the iPhone SE 2020.

A post on OnePlus' official forums by Imaging Director Simon Liu describes the design process for the Nord's camera and the technology used to make it a reality. Then one can see the specifications of the camera and a display that allows one to appreciate the photography technology of the smartphone.

"After months of product planning, internal discussions, and testing, we decided to equip the Nord with six cameras. Two of the rear cameras actively take pictures, while the other two function as sensors.

This setup includes a 48MP IMX586 main camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 5MP depth sensor, and a macro sensor. On the front, there is an additional 32MP main selfie camera and an ultrawide camera of undisclosed resolution. Interestingly, Liu notes that the Nord will be the first OnePlus phone with dual selfie (front) cameras.

Just a day before these camera specs were revealed, Shawn L, Nord's head of product, confirmed some details in the same forum. These were details we already suspected about the device's display: the Nord will feature a 6.4-inch 90Hz display, implemented to fit OnePlus' "Fast and Smooth" parameters. The team has worked "relentlessly" to optimize this technology, which was first implemented in the 2019 OnePlus 7 Pro.

According to OnePlus, in addition to working on the display since last year, the team has also perfected "the most trivial details," such as the device's lock screen animations. The forum post explains that these animations, which last a total of "3 seconds," are crucial to providing an "overall fast and smooth experience," as well as software optimization.

The post details some of the hardware of the device we already knew about, including the Snapdragon 7656G chip combined with 12GB of RAM. This chipset is not the high-end Snapdragon 8 series we have come to expect from OnePlus phones, nor is it found in the OnePlus 8 Pro. but combined with its large amount of RAM, it promises to be a pretty fast phone.

Apple's cheapest smartphone has the same A13 Bionic chip found in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max, so the OnePlus Nord will not be able to match the iPhone SE in performance. However, the iPhone SE with its 4.7-inch display and single rear camera is no match for the OnePlus Nord.

But these are specs on paper. The real winner will be determined by our own testing and various direct comparisons, and we'll let you know when we test the Nord's capabilities.

So far, all signs point to the Nord being a great budget phone. And there is still a good chance that it will be released in the US.

Tuomas Lampen, head of European strategy for OnePlus, said in an interview with Tom's Guide that the company will use Europe and India as test areas and measure sales performance in those regions. If there is demand for the Nord, sales in Western countries could be a possibility; we will have to wait and see what happens in the days leading up to the OnePlus Nord announcement on July 21.
