Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 leak just confirmed huge upgrade

If last week's leaked information about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 seemed a little too good to be true, you'll be pleased to hear that the biggest improvement, the size of the screen when closed, has been confirmed by firmware for the upcoming device.

The leaked firmware, analyzed by Max Weinbach of XDA Developers in a very detailed Twitter thread, points to a 25:9 aspect ratio for the front screen. This is an unusual number, but exactly the same as the elongated size of the Galaxy Fold when closed.

For what it's worth, the original Galaxy Fold's front screen aspect ratio was more normal at 21:9, but the cover's display was placed as a strange island in front, and for a long time I thought things like bezels were only in the history books. Compare the photo of the original Galaxy Fold below with the rendered image of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 at the top of the page, and you'll quickly see why this is such an exciting improvement, both aesthetically and in terms of usability.

The entire thread is worth a read, but here are a few other highlights. First, you can take pictures with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 closed, using the front screen as a viewfinder. If you don't mind looking a little ridiculous, you can even take a selfie using the main camera with the device unfolded (in this case, the built-in screen is turned off).

In Pro Video mode, you can now select the audio source you wish to record from, including the front microphone, rear microphone, both, or an external source via USB or Bluetooth. Video can now be shot up to 8K in a 21:9 aspect ratio, and Single Take (Samsung's method of taking multiple shots at once to increase selection) can be set to any length between 5 and 15 seconds.

Overall, the Galaxy Fold 2 is in pretty good shape. In addition to the above, rumors suggest that it will be powered by a Snapdragon 865 Plus, with 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of onboard storage. The screen will reportedly support a 120Hz refresh rate and will have a triple camera array supported by two selfie lenses.

It is coming very soon. Samsung has scheduled its next Unpacked event for August 5, where the Fold 2 will likely get at least a sneak preview alongside Samsung's Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Tab S7, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and Galaxy Watch 3.
