First PS5 Hands-on: See DualSense in action now

Sony recently announced its innovative DualSense controller for the PS5, and now we can finally get a feel for how the gamepad will feel during actual gameplay. Keighley had an exclusive hands-on with the controller and detailed how features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers work during gameplay.

Keighley's demo featured Astro's Playroom, a cute 3D platformer that will be pre-installed on every PS5. The game makes clever use of the pad's microphone and rumble technology to create a uniquely immersive experience that seems well suited to show off its dual-sense capabilities.

Keighley was particularly impressed with the DualSense speakers, stating that they create a unique "harmony" between the controller, the sound, and what is happening on the PS5. For example, Keighley noted that when he walked through a sandstorm in the game, the sound of sand coming from the controller complemented the heightened tension created by the tactile feedback.

"I've never felt anything like this before," Keighley said.

On one occasion, Keighley wore a frog suit in a game to demonstrate the dual-sense adaptive trigger. The host called out the change in tension felt while jumping around in the frog suit, simulating the feel of the springs that allow the character to bounce around.

DualSense again featured 6 degrees of motion control, allowing the controller's microphone to be used in unique ways (for example, Keighley had to breathe into the microphone to activate parts of the game).

With regard to weight and feel, Keighley noted that while the DualSense is heavier than the PS4 DualShock 4 controller, it "doesn't feel substantially heavier. In fact, he said that the added weight of the controller is a good thing and slightly increases the ergonomic grip.
