iOS14 and Android11emojis reveal — here are the latest additions

First look at the changes Apple and Google are making to emoji in iOS 14 and Android 11. And the good news is that there are more than ever, and they are very pretty.

This is according to a report by The Verge and Emojipedia, which collected emoji previewed by both companies.

The subjects of the 117 new emoji had already been decided upon in January by the Unicode Consortium (the industry group that decides which characters will be added to the Unicode standard). However, this is the first time that Apple and Google have revealed how these emoji will be rendered on the iPhone and Android phones.

To summarize the new additions to the emoji catalog, new gender variations of classic emojis like bride, groom, and feeding milk to a baby; new anatomical symbols like realistically drawn heart and lungs; transgender flags joining other gender and LGBTQ+ icons and symbols.

There will also be new foods and drinks like tamales, fondue, and bubble tea, as well as new animals like the dodo and polar bear.

Apple's version will likely apply to all major platforms, so you will see these designs on macOS as well as iOS. Apple's customizable Memoji will also have new face mask options.

On Android, meanwhile, Google is focusing on redesigning some animal emojis; according to Emojipedia, users of the Android 11 Beta may have already encountered these emojis, but they are now also in the stable version of the OS reliably provided. For example, take a look at the new turtle emoji based on the ones originally present in Android between 2013 and 2017.

Google will have its own designs for the wide selection of new emojis that will be introduced, but seems to be keeping them a bit more secretive.

Hopefully users will be happy with this update, as it appears that the next emoji won't appear until 2022. This is because the Unicode Consortium is delaying the finalization of the next standard due to problems caused by the coronavirus outbreak.
