Stimulus Check 2: AOC Urges McConnell to "get to work"

As Senators prepare to return to work next week, House Democrats are pressuring lawmakers to pass stimulus check 2 quickly.

In a tweet posted Tuesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (R-NY) urged Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to "get to work" on a new stimulus package that includes a second round of direct payments for the economic stimulus.

"The House voted two months ago to send a second round of the stimulus package, and Senate Republicans haven't even discussed it. For a party that pretends to care about hard work, they are the laziest leaders in COVID. Even House Republicans work more, and they don't even read the bills."

The U.S. House of Representatives passed its second stimulus package, the Heroes Act, in May, but the proposal stalled after the Senate failed to approve it. The bill would provide an additional $1,200 in direct benefits to eligible Americans, including expanded benefits for dependent children and workers with taxpayer identification numbers.

The Senate is in recess until July 17, but McConnell has recently indicated that he could begin consideration of the bill as early as next week.

It is not clear what the Senate bill would entail. McConnell has suggested that additional direct payments could be implemented soon, although they might be limited to those earning less than $40,000 a year. Other Republican senators have also expressed hesitation about the stimulus check2.

If the House-approved Heroes Act moves forward, Americans earning less than $75,000 per year (if single) and less than $150,000 per year (if married) will receive payments of $1,200 per person and each dependent child, and up to $6,000 per family member The maximum amount is $6,000 per family member. Taxpayers who receive up to $99,000 for single taxpayers and $198,000 for married couples combined would receive a smaller amount.

The White House has also hinted at additional direct payments, with President Trump saying he prefers "bigger numbers," and White House economic advisor Larry Kudlow saying that "direct checks will probably be part" of the next stimulus package.
