Samsung's Galaxy Tab S7 will be an impressive tablet that can compete with the iPad Pro 2020, but it will not include a key feature.

SamMobile reported that Samsung's upcoming tablet, which will be available in 11-inch and 12.4-inch sizes, will not include a fingerprint scanner under the display. This is an odd omission given that Samsung had included an ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the displays of its Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy Note 10 phones.

According to SamMobile sources, the Galaxy Tab S7 will instead use a fingerprint reader built into the power button. This was a huge success for Samsung with the Galaxy S10e, and the fingerprint scanner was fast and responsive. However, it was located in a position that was easily accessible to the thumb and index finger. On a tablet, such a scanner might be a bit of a stretch to quickly tap the power button to unlock or authorize an online purchase.

However, according to SamMobile, this may only be the case for the 11-inch Galaxy Tab S7, and the larger Galaxy Tab S7 Plus may still use an ultrasonic fingerprint reader.

However, neither form of fingerprint scanner would be as clever as the Face ID unlock system that the iPad Pro features. This facial recognition system makes unlocking the tablet seamless, and given the advanced biometric scanning that the Face ID system does, there is no compromise in security.

Despite the lack of an in-display fingerprint reader, the Galaxy Tab S7 still has plenty to excite. Not only will it feature Qualcomm's latest and greatest Snapdragon 865 Plus chip, but it is also rumored to have a 120Hz refresh rate display sandwiched between slim bezels to highlight the AMOLED screen.

A rear camera consisting of 13MP and 5MP lenses would also give the tablet smartphone-grade photography capabilities. However, trying to take pictures with an 11-inch tablet is not recommended.

Other key specs include up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space. Additionally, a keyboard accessory will help turn the Galaxy Tab S7 into a productivity device like the Microsoft Surface Pro 7.

We expect the Galaxy Tab S7 to be revealed on August 5, along with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Galaxy Tab S7, and Galaxy Watch 3. These assorted events should give us an idea of where Samsung's technology will be going in 2021.
