Lego is making the NES console - and it looks totally awesome

We never expected a Lego replica of the Nintendo Entertainment System to be released. Leaked images of the Nintendo Lego set began circulating today (via GamesRadar), and Lego officially confirmed the news in a tweet.

The set was originally published on the Chinese website VJGamer, which shows the box, pieces, and instructions. Not only can the Lego NES build a replica of the iconic 1983 console and its controller, but it can also build an old-school CRT TV with a blocky game of Super Mario Bros.

According to leaked images, the set contains 2,646 pieces and comes with movable parts and TV sound effects. The brick TV includes a dial that can be used to move Mario, and the set appears to be compatible with the Lego Super Mario toy we saw earlier this year.

The first LEGO-Nintendo collaboration, LEGO Super Mario, was unveiled in March; the assembled toy set, which will be available in August, lets you build your own Mario levels, thanks to an interactive Mario figure that keeps track of coins collected, enemies defeated, etc. so you can actually "play" with them. It's pretty ambitious and could be one of the most interesting "toy-to-life experiences" ever.

But this nostalgic NES set may just become a holiday must-have for old-school gamers of all ages this fall. We eagerly await new information on the LEGO NES.
