The Google Pixel 4a is expected to launch this month to battle the iPhone SE and OnePlus Nord. However, another 5G version could also be on the way.

According to 9to5Google, codenames for Google's phone lineup have appeared on the Google App, including "Pixel 4a 5G" and "Pixel 5". These codenames are associated with the Snapdragon 765G chipset, so both handsets should support 5G connectivity.

The regular Google Pixel 4a, which is expected to be available soon, will be a 4G-only device, as it is said to be powered by a Snapdragon 730 chip. Interestingly, the Pixel 4a 5G is codenamed "bramble," which many expect to be the Pixel 5 XL.

So what is going on? Google may not offer a Google Pixel 5 XL model and instead announce both the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G at a hardware event this fall.

This raises the question of how different the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G will be, especially if they feature the same chip; 9to5Google speculates that the Pixel 5 may be made of glass and the Pixel 4a 5G of plastic.

The Pixel 5 is also likely to have more rear or front cameras than the Pixel 4a 5G. In fact, we have heard that the Pixel 5 may have three rear lenses: a main camera, a telephoto shooter, and an ultra-wide angle lens.

We haven't heard much else about the Pixel 5's specs, but recent leaks have pointed to a possible 6.1-inch screen size, which would be larger than the 5.8-inch panel expected on the Pixel 4a, but not by much. Google may also decide to reserve a faster refresh rate display for the Pixel 5 to further differentiate it from the Pixel 4a 5G.

The biggest issue is cost: the Pixel 5G is expected to be positioned as a mid-range device rather than a flagship, so the price is likely to be in the $699 range; the Pixel 4a is heard to start at $349, so what premium will the 5G Will it? Our guess is $449 or at most $499, which would put it in the same price range as the OnePlus Nord.

The OnePlus Nord, which will not be available in the US, will feature a Snapdragon 765G chip, four rear cameras, two front cameras, and an OLED display. If this Google Pixel 4a 5G rumor is legitimate, Google could have a true Nord challenger on its hands.
