Stimulus Check 2 will be passed this month, Treasury Secretary says

According to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, a second round of stimulus could be approved by the government by the end of this month.

While a second round of stimulus has been in limbo since the House passed the Heroes Act in May, comments by several Republican leaders in recent weeks suggest that Americans can expect to see another round of economic stimulus payments before the coronavirus outbreak is over.

In an interview with CNBC on Thursday, Mnuchin said the next government bailout package will include a stimulus package and could be ratified by the end of July.

According to the Treasury Secretary, the fourth coronavirus relief package is a top priority among congressional leaders, and if talks proceed as planned, the package is likely to be facilitated soon.

Treasury Secretary Mnuchin also provided an update on the $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit, which expires at the end of this month; although the June jobs report showed improvement over April's previous unemployment record, there are still many who rely on government checks for essentials.

The White House plans to change the unemployment benefits program before the current plan expires, Mnuchin said.

Mnuchin did not comment on the $40,000 income cap proposed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell earlier this week. McConnell said he would propose his own stimulus package when the Senate returns from recess.

However, President Trump recently said he would support a "bigger number" for a second stimulus package.

If you are wondering whether you will benefit from the second round of stimulus, please see our guide on who is (and who is not) eligible for the currently planned payments. You can also use the Stimulus Check 2 calculator to see how much you could receive.

The federal government began sending out stimulus benefits provided under the Cares Act in April, but because of the time it takes to process them, you may not yet have received what you are eligible to receive.

If you would like to track the status of your payments, you can use the IRS Get My Payment app and set up stimulus check notifications in the USPS Informed Delivery tool to receive alerts when your check or stimulus check debit card is due for delivery.

You can also call the IRS stimulus check phone number to speak with a representative.
