Today (July 9) the public beta of iPadOS 14 is released! Anyone with an Apple ID (free) can get iPadOS 14 and try out Apple Pencil Scribble and other new tricks.

We're excited to see how good Scribble is now, as handwritten text and erase by scratch are two features that should make the Apple Pencil worth the $99-$129 price tag. iPadOS 14 also has a number of perks from iOS 14, including changes to widgets and the Messages app.

But of course, with every beta release, there are a few caveats you should know up front:

First, there are two iPadOS 14 beta versions. The first beta, released at WWDC last month, is the Developer Beta, which most people should skip. It is a bit riskier and requires a $100 Apple Developer account (which can be purchased here).

The public beta, on the other hand, is a bit more reliable, as it has a bit more time in the oven!

Next, make sure your iPad is backed up. iCloud Backups is the easiest way to do this. 11]

Connect your iPad, open Finder (or iTunes for iOS 12), select your iPad from the left menu, [Summary ], you can also back up locally to your Mac.

Next, under "Backup" (not iCloud), select "This Computer" and click "Backup Now."

Also, if you are already using iPadOS 13, you do not need to worry about compatibility. iPadOS 14 supports the exact same iPads as iPadOS 13. If you are not using iPadOS 13, here is a list of supported iPads:

You will need to restart your iPad, which may take a while. iPadOS 14 Public Beta will be installed!
