While we love the best cloud storage services, I use both external drives and cloud services to backup my laptop. Why? Because if something goes wrong with my laptop, there is no quicker way to restore it than a local drive. I would argue that the cloud is a great way to keep off-site backups (which you can have mailed to you from the cloud service) in case something happens at home (let's say your surge protector fails).
