Android 11 is set to launch on September 8, but Google accidentally leaked that date in a video from its Smart Home Summit.

The blunder was made by Michele Turner, director of product management for Google's Smart Home Ecosystem division, who hosted the video at the developer summit. The video has since been removed by Google, but sibling site TechRadar discovered it and noted that this meant that September 8 was likely the launch date for Android 11.

A September launch of Android 11 had been planned before the leak, as new versions of Android tend to be announced around September and October each year, usually coinciding with the launch of the new Pixel phones. However, this accidental release by Google confirms this.

What details were not revealed is which phones will receive the update to Android 11. Models participating in the Android One initiative, such as Google's Pixel phones and Nokia's devices, tend to get the new version of Android before other Android phones.

OnePlus tends to be fairly quick to get its phones up to the latest Android version, so expect the OnePlus 8 Pro to be upgraded to Android 11 before 2020 is over. [Given the high price of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, this may be a bit of a concern. Anecdotally speaking, it took a while for our Galaxy Note 10 Plus to be upgraded to Android 10; even though Android 10 was released in 2019, the software upgrade took place this year.

When Android 11 is released, it is expected to add a series of new features. These range from new privacy controls and dedicated conversation notifications to a new power button menu, a new media player widget, screen reader, redesigned app icons, improved streaming services, and better ways to screen calls The list goes on.

This looks to be a pretty significant Android update. However, those who want to try it out before the official launch can try the Android 11 beta.
