iPhone12 Hands-on video reveals impressive new design

Another hands-on video of an iPhone 12 dummy unit has been released, giving us another look at the design of Apple's next smartphone.

This new video comes courtesy of MacRumors, which has obtained three dummy units of the 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 models.

From the MacRumors video, one can see how the flat, square edges of the iPhone 12 design differ from the rounded aesthetic of the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. While this design may seem fresh, it is actually reminiscent of the venerable iPhone 4 design, which was a triumph of industrial design.

As with previous hands-on videos with dummy units, the smaller 5.4-inch iPhone 12 has a more compact footprint than the iPhone SE 2020, making it a much smaller device by 2020 standards. For people with small hands who struggle with the size of phones in 2019 and 2020, the iPhone 12's smaller handset may be exactly what they are looking for.

Aside from the design, there are no other big things that the hands-on video shows. The display cutouts on the dummy units are the same size as the current iPhone, and the rear camera modules on all units are modeled after the three cameras on the iPad Pro 2020.

However, these are apparently not accurate representations of the notch or camera setup. The notch is expected to be smaller than the iPhone 11. Also, the standard iPhone 12 model is expected to have two rear-facing cameras, while only the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are expected to have three cameras. The latter model is also said to feature the same advanced LiDAR scanner as the iPad Pro.

Speaking of differences, only the Pro mode is expected to feature a 120 Hz refresh rate display, but some new rumors cast doubt on that. By not featuring a high refresh rate display, the iPhone 12 will fall behind when competing against the likes of Samsung's Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy S20, and OnePlus 8 Pro.

However, the A14 chipset's specs up, it should mean that Apple will put the best silicon into the iPhone 12 series. And we expect the software side of the phone's photography to be improved to keep rival Android phones at bay.

Specs and features aside, the iPhone 12 is likely to draw interest thanks to its redesign, which sets it apart from many Android phones with a more rounded design. In addition, improvements such as the home screen widgets that Apple included in iOS 14 should also increase the appeal of the new iPhone. It will probably be available in September or at the latest in October.
