Galaxy Note 20 and iPhone12 release date just leaked — Mark your calendar

Wondering when your favorite flagship smartphone will be released later this year? A South Korean news site lists release dates for Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 and Apple's iPhone 12.

Based in South Korea, ETNews covers the technology market, focusing on the supply chain where cell phone manufacturers produce their flagship devices. As such, it provides a pretty good idea of when upcoming phones will ship, at least in the Korean market.

In a report on 5G-enabled phones launching in Korea in late 2020, ETNews noted that the Galaxy Note 20 will be unveiled at a Samsung online event on August 5. It will then ship a few weeks later on August 21.

This is consistent with previous rumors about a Note 20 date, including one previously announced by ETNews. It also follows Samsung's typical schedule of announcing a new flagship phone, taking pre-orders for the handset, and releasing it to retailers a few weeks later.

The information about the iPhone 12 is less specific, but given the uncertainty surrounding the release of that phone, it gives a better sense of when Apple's next phone will hit the market. according to ETNews, the iPhone 12's domestic release is scheduled for October

The iPhone 12 is usually released in the United States in October.

Typically, Apple holds an iPhone launch event in the first half of September, and the phones hit store shelves one to two weeks later. This year, Apple's production schedule has reportedly been disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak, and no one knows exactly when the new phones will arrive.

iPhone12 rumors have been all over the map, with others predicting a delay of only a few weeks while others have raised the specter of the iPhone12 not arriving until November. The ETNews report of an October release sounds like it's right in the middle of that theoretical timeframe.

Samsung and Apple's 5G phones aren't the only flagship models launching this fall; the ETNews report also mentions an LG device, codenamed "Wing," coming in October. A sort of foldable phone, the LG Wing will reportedly feature a rotatable 6.8-inch display, with a smaller 4-inch secondary screen appearing below it.

But it will be the iPhone 12 versus the Galaxy Note 20 that will be the smartphone showdown this fall. Apple's newest smartphone will come in four sizes, ranging from 5.4 inches to 6.7 inches, and the Note 20 is expected to be available in 6.4-inch and 6.9-inch versions.

The Note 20 is rumored to feature the Snapdragon 865 Plus system-on-chip, although the Apple phone will likely be powered by the upcoming A14 processor. While all models are expected to have 5G connectivity, cheaper iPhone 12 models may not be able to connect to faster mmWave-based networks.
