The Pixel 4 was a generally good phone, plagued by a terrible battery and an inexcusable number of glitches that are hard to forgive if you are lucky. So it should come as no surprise to hear that Google has turned around with the Pixel 5 to a more practical and economical, yet premium, product.

These new Pixel 5 renderings by David Kowalski (@xleaks7) and Pigtou, allegedly based on leaked schematics, finally bring Google's major shift in strategy for its next high-end device into focus.

If the renderings we are seeing here come to tell the final design of the Pixel 5, Google's next flagship will be a true full-screen design with bezels of equal size on the top, bottom, left, and right, for a three-dimensional secure Face Unlock and Soli Motion Sense air gestures would both be omitted. A single-lens hole-punch camera in the upper left corner of the screen recalls a kinship with the oft-leaked Pixel 4a.

Turning to the back, the former Pixel Imprint capacitive fingerprint sensor is back, seemingly offering further evidence that Google has given up on Face Unlock, at least for now. As someone who has had extensive experience with Google's and Apple's approaches to facial recognition, this is a real shame, as I found the Pixel 4's system to be much faster and less prone to false negatives.

From the back and sides, however, the Pixel 5 is virtually indistinguishable from the Pixel 4 thanks to the rounded square camera bump, dual-lens camera, and color trim on the power key. It is still unclear what these optics will look like, but many are hoping that Google will opt for an ultra-wide-angle lens to complement the main lens, as opposed to the telephoto lens on the Pixel 4.

According to Kowalski and Pigtou, the Pixel 5 should have a 5.8-inch OLED panel, resulting in a device footprint comparable in size to the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro and slightly smaller than the 6.1-inch iPhone 11 . If we are to believe this leak, the Pixel 5 will be about 1 mm wider than the Pixel 4, a couple of mm shorter in length, and thinner in thickness.

In other words, the Pixel 5 may not be larger than the flagship it will replace. That is a bit concerning, especially in terms of what it might mean for the device's battery life.

The Pixel 4's charge life was abysmal considering it only had a 2,800mAh battery. Let's hope Google can beef up the battery as much as possible by getting rid of the fancy Face Unlock and radar array on the top bezel.

Sources also note that there is no headphone jack on the Pixel 5, which is a bit surprising given that Google will reportedly target more price-sensitive buyers with this phone, while the Pixel 4 launched for $799, According to one survey published by Mountain View, the starting price for the Pixel 5 is $699, preferably with 128GB of onboard storage. (The base model of the Pixel 4 only has 64GB.)

These renders are the first we've seen of the Pixel 5 in a while, so it's a little too early to pass judgment; Pigtou has no track record on such things, so if future leaks confirm this, these renders will tell us that we are indeed on the right track. That said, if Google is really as diligent about lowering the price of the Pixel 5 as we're hearing, the cost savings here are certainly believable.
