Moto Razr2 Spec Leaked — Here's how it compares to Galaxy Z Flip5G

The rumored Motorola Razr 2 appears to be nearing release. A new major spec leak shows how Motorola intends to rebuild its trouble-ridden first attempt at a folding phone. While there are signs of improvement according to the specs, it may not be a big enough boost to overcome Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

This information comes from Evan Blass, a veteran smartphone leaker who has proven himself time and again to be a reliable source. His post mentions the name "Motorola Odyssey," which is most likely the internal codename for this revamped Razr.

The Motorola Razr 5G, as this new model is known, comes in the new color Cosmic Silver. While there was little wrong with the black and gold options of the first Razr, this new option sounds at least attractive.

Storage is doubled to 256GB, which should be more than enough for most users. Previous leaks claimed that it would have 8GB of RAM, but there is no indication as to what the RAM will be, but the first generation had just 6GB. Also unknown is the battery capacity, which should be increased from the tiny 2,510 mAh cell on the first Razr foldable. According to the same earlier leak, the new battery will be 2,845 mAh, which is more, but not necessarily enough to solve the problem of short battery life on the phone.

Compare this to the current Galaxy Z Flip, which is the template for the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5G, the Razr 5G's main rival. It already has an 8GB RAM/256GB storage/memory combination, but that will not change with the 5G overhaul, which is a good thing for Motorola. Battery capacity will be higher, however, with two cells combining to provide 3,300 mAh. According to recent leaks, it may drop to 3,204 mAh, but that would still be more than the upgraded Razr.

Android 10 will once again be the pre-installed OS. Hopefully, updates to Android 11 will begin and will likely be optimized specifically for folding as flexible smartphones become more common in the coming years.

The SIM card slot is not very interesting, but it is interesting to see nano SIM and eSIM options on this spec list. The original Razr only had eSIM and was only available on Verizon in the US and EE in the UK. If Motorola has found a way to put a physical SIM tray on the new Razr, it would theoretically allow the phone to be used on any carrier as desired, assuming Motorola offers unlocked handsets.

The main display will remain 6.2 inches, but hopefully the folding mechanism may be upgraded. When the phone is folded, not only is there a large gap between the display and the body that allows debris to get in, but it also makes a persistent cheesy sound after only a few days of use. This is something Motorola really needs to fix, especially considering that the price of this phone is likely to hit the $1,500 mark like the original.

The Z Flip's display is larger than this at 6.7 inches. Undoubtedly superior is the build quality, which protects the delicate hinge mechanism well, and the base price of $1,380. assuming the price doesn't go up with the addition of 5G, it's hard to justify spending more money on an inferior spec foldable phone like the Razr

5G

5G support is probably the biggest new feature. This will probably require a new 5G-capable chipset, probably the Snapdragon 765G, given that the original used the Snapdragon 710; the Z Flip has a Snapdragon 855 Plus, and the Snapdragon 865 Plus will be equipped with the Snapdragon 865 Plus.

Given Motorola's close relationship with Verizon, the Razr 5G will likely have mmWave-compatible antennas. However, previous leaks of the Razr 5G suggested that it would support the more common sub-6GHz standard, which the Z Flip 5G also seems to use.

The previously rumored camera upgrade can also be seen here. The original Razr had a 5MP front camera and a 16MP rear camera, but this time around, with powerful 20MP and 48MP sensors, compared to the Z Flip's dual 12MP sensors and internal 10MP sensor, the only area in which the Razr could surpass Samsung's foldable area appears to be the only area in which the Razr could outperform Samsung's foldable.

The photo functionality of the original Razr was disappointing, although it did have some usable features, such as using the outer display to take selfies with the main camera. Hopefully a higher resolution sensor will solve these problems.

While there is no mention of a release date in the Blass leak, we have been expecting the Razr 5G to arrive in September based on previous rumors. That's around the same time that Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5G should also arrive. The original Z Flip was a far superior phone to the Razr and was our favorite foldable phone ever. Motorola is definitely taking a step in the right direction with these leaked upgrades to the Razr, but we'll have to wait a bit longer to see if it's enough to declare it better than the Z Flip.
