Disney Plus's Hamilton is the biggest streaming event of 2020 — Here's why

I feel like I have been waiting in my room to watch "Hamilton" online for a long time. I had this feeling long before I knew Hamilton was going to air on Disney Plus. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.

However, it wasn't until 2016 that the biographical musical of Alexander Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda won 11 Tony Awards. For the next four years, Hamilton was the hottest ticket on the planet.

I had yet to see it once and always felt "right" by its call, but the hype never subsided. The multiple podcasts I listened to often talked about how great the show was. When a live recording of the Hamilton performance was posted on a streaming service, I even tried to listen to it, but the disconnect of the lack of video quickly stopped me.

Even when the performances stopped selling out so often, I still didn't buy it. This was because the cheapest seats to see "Hamilton" in New York City were $199, too expensive for me. I have paid more for tickets to live events before, but that was when I was already committed to promoting the team and wrestling (I would argue that wrestling is similar to Hamilton, and South Park practically backed me once).

That's why "Hamilton," which opens Friday (July 3) on Disney Plus, is the most anticipated event of the year in streaming media: to the widest audience of anyone with $7 and access to the Internet, the It opens up the largest stage of its generation to the widest audience: anyone with $7 and Internet access.

In the absence of movie theaters this summer, Hamilton feels like the closest thing to a big box office event.

Yes, "Hamilton" has traveled the world, from Off-Broadway to Broadway, from Chicago to San Francisco, from Los Angeles to Seattle, and even across the ocean to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and London's West End, but those curious but not eager have always been out of reach for those who are curious but not eager. I don't know if Disney will reveal how many people will see "Hamilton" this weekend, but I doubt I'm alone.

Internationally, Hamilton has never been performed in the Netherlands, its debut in Germany (fall 2020) and Australia (2021) is far off, and it was only in Canada for about a month before COVID-19 hit, so to see Hamilton large numbers of people who would need to fly.

Now the world can see why Lin-Manuel Miranda has become a household name. Stage director Thomas Cale will helm the film adaptation (originally scheduled for release in October 2021), which will also feature the entire original Broadway cast.

However, the engineering and production of "Hamilton" on Disney Plus will likely be the biggest reason for all audiences, new and old, to make sure they have a Disney Plus account; according to CNN, the adaptation will feature a mix of wide shots and close-up shots are mixed to create "a more cinematic experience that goes beyond the 'best seats in the house.'"

Which brings me to my slight concern about "Hamilton," which I plan to see this weekend: will it live up to the four-plus years of hype? Have I simply become so saturated with Hamilton's content that it has become too pervasive? At least I can finally check "See Hamilton" off my to-do list.
