Giant Galaxy Z Flip 5G Leak Reveals All Major Specifications

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G has been the subject of a massive spec leak thanks to a mandatory certification process that the phone must pass before it hits store shelves.

The certification comes from Chinese agency TENAA (via TechRadar), which recently discovered a list of phones that closely resemble the Z Flip 5G. And what this information shows is a phone that is quite similar to the original Galaxy Z Flip that appeared in February of this year, but with some welcome changes.

Newly leaked images reveal a phone that looks very similar to the original Z Flip, but with a fresh gray color. This looks similar to the Cosmic Gray option on the Galaxy S20 Plus and Galaxy S20 Ultra, and would be a good third option alongside the Mirror Black and Mirror Purple available on the original Z Flip.

The Z Flip 5G may also see some camera changes, but we have our doubts. The certification listings state that it will have a single 12MP camera and a dual 12MP and 10MP camera. This could be interpreted as Samsung sacrificing one of the external sensors to increase the resolution of the built-in selfie camera.

However, one must consider the possibility that this is just an odd way to describe the same camera setup as the original: two 12MP cameras on the outside (main camera and ultra-wide camera) and one 10MP camera on the inside.

A less welcome change seems to be the phone's battery, which is slightly smaller; TENAA lists the Z Flip 5G's battery as 2,500 mAh and 704 mAh. The total is 3,204 mAh, 96 mAh less than the Z Flip's battery total of 3,300 mAh.

Not a huge decrease, but a decrease all the same. Samsung may have done this to make room for the 5G antenna, so we hope that battery management has improved at the same time. the Z Flip lasted 8 hours and 16 minutes in Tom's Guide's custom battery test during our review, and a similarly built better than the Motorola Razr (2020), but still below the average of 10 hours. In other words, the 5G version cannot be a significant drop in runtime from the original version unless it becomes a major issue in everyday use.

The certification list also seems to confirm the presence of the previously rumored Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset, based on the 3.09 Ghz frequency recorded in the table; the Snapdragon 855 Plus has a frequency of 2.95 GHz, so this phone could be likely using a yet-to-be-announced revised version of Qualcomm's 2020 flagship chipset.

Finally, there is confirmation of everything that will not change, including the phone's size, weight, storage capacity, and RAM; it would have been nice to see 8GB more RAM or a slightly lighter weight, but these specs did not stop us from liking the original. That said, we expect the Z Flip 5G, along with the other changes mentioned above, to be a solid improvement on an already impressive phone.

The Z Flip 5G is expected to make its first appearance sometime between August and October. With the Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Fold 2, and Galaxy S20 Fan Edition being announced during this three-month period, it makes sense for Samsung to launch the revised Z Flip at the same time as one of these major announcements. This is because Samsung's other major foldable device will be the Fold 2.
