Windows 10 finally allows you to recover lost files — here's how to do it

Windows File Recovery will be your new favorite Windows 10 app. While not the most exciting tool, this Microsoft-made file manager will help you out if you accidentally delete a file.

The app is free to download from the Windows Store (via The Verge). However, it requires Windows 10 version 2004 to use it, so it is recommended that you keep your PC up-to-date.

There are many file recovery apps available, but for the casual user who has lost an important file or folder, it is a difficult decision which one to trust. This app is made by Microsoft and can only be downloaded from the Microsoft storefront, so you can be sure you are not downloading some malware in disguise that will further ruin your day.

It works with any kind of local storage, including internal hard drives, USB flash drives, and SD cards. Be careful with cloud data.

The app runs on the Windows command line, which may be a bit confusing at startup. However, don't worry too much, as the default settings are sufficient to retrieve lost files. In addition, if you need more specific instructions, Microsoft has put together a clear Windows File Recovery support page.

If that doesn't work, you can switch the app to segment mode or signature mode (the latter is the only mode available for USB recovery).

If you use this app to restore files, remember to do it now, not later. The longer you wait to restore your files, the more likely your PC is overwriting your data.
