Watch "Perry Mason" online tonight on HBO Max and HBO for more of one of its most iconic characters (the rebooted version) The limited series, which premiered on June 21, is already an HBO blockbuster. It is the biggest debut of the past two years and has surpassed "Watchmen" and "The Outsiders" in viewer numbers.

The new show, Perry Mason, centers on a character who first appeared in Earl Stanley Gardner's novels published between 1933 and 1973. Perry Mason has also been made into a movie and a television show, most notably a CBS drama that aired from 1957 to 1966.

But HBO's version is definitely not your parents' or grandparents' Perry Mason. Played by Emmy Award winner Matthew Rhys (formerly of "The Americans"), the character is a fallen, hard-boiled private detective with a troubled past; the show, set in 1932, is about the oil boom, the movie industry, the summer Olympics, and the massive evangelical Christian revival that has made A prosperous Los Angeles is portrayed.

In the pilot episode, Perry and his partner Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham) catch a Hollywood actor who breaks the morality clause. Later, Perry is called in by attorney E.B. Jonathan (John Lithgow) to help investigate the case of a boy who was kidnapped and murdered. But he has no idea what he has gotten himself into.
