Windows 10 users may have experienced unexpected reboots recently due to a new issue uncovered in several build versions of Microsoft's operating system.

As reported by BleepingComputer and ZDNet, the error is causing problems on devices running Windows 10 versions 1809 and later, including versions 1903, 1909, and 2004. Two previous optional updates that users can download to fix another bug affecting printer connections are also reportedly affected. [lsass.exe is typically responsible for addressing security on current Windows users' devices, such as recording login credentials and managing single sign-on systems for business users.

However, in the aforementioned build of Windows 10, LSASS fails, and when it fails, it forces the Windows 10 machine to reboot. As a result, users may lose data due to an unexpected and unavoidable reboot.

This error can be confirmed by the following message: "A critical system process, C:∕WINDOWSsystem32∕lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000008. The machine must be restarted.

Fortunately, rebooting seems to solve the problem, at least temporarily. One user reports that one such forced reboot solves the device for that day, but the problem reappears the next day

Microsoft has stated that it plans to provide a fix by the end of July. However, the bug has only been noted in version 1903 and later, and it is questionable whether users with older builds of Windows 10 dating back to version 1809 will eventually receive a patch.

If your Windows 10 machine is suffering from these issues, you can fix the problem yourself by uninstalling the cumulative Windows 10 update that was updated in June. However, this will downgrade your computer's overall defenses, so you should proceed with caution.
