Marvel's Avengers is Coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X — What You Need To Know

The latest PS4 and Xbox Series X game to receive a free upgrade is the highly anticipated superhero adventure Marvel's Avengers, which Square Enix plans to release on September 4.

Gary Snetschen of Crystal Dynamics confirmed the news in a PlayStation Blog post, highlighting some of the key features that Avengers will enjoy on the next-generation platform, as well as revealing some impressive-looking screenshots.

In addition to improved textures and lighting, Marvel's Avengers will offer PS5 players the choice of an Enhanced Graphics mode that pulls all visual settings and a High Frame Rate mode that aims for 60 frames per second stability at 4K The first two modes will be available in the new version of the game. Of course, "The Avengers" will also benefit from PS5's SSD, which will virtually eliminate load times and allow players to "seamlessly jump into missions anywhere in the game world. In addition, the PS5 and PS4 will be able to enjoy cross-play between the PS5 and PS4.

While these upgrades sound great, the big story here is that more and more of the PS4's hottest titles are getting free upgrades for the next generation. This news follows the announcement that "Cyberpunk 2077," "Madden NFL 21," and "FIFA 21" will receive similar free upgrades from PS4 to PS5, suggesting that many top publishers will choose to offer this benefit to their games.

Square Enix said it will share more information about the Xbox Series X upgrade program for Avengers in the future; it is unclear if the Xbox Series X version of the game will be included in Microsoft's Smart Delivery program or if players will have to go another route. It is unclear if they will have to go through a different route.

Microsoft has been promoting "Smart Delivery" for several months, which automatically gives players a free Xbox Series X upgrade when they purchase select Xbox One games. The program includes first-party titles such as Halo Infinite and Gears 5, as well as major third-party games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

On the other hand, PS5 game upgrades appear to be determined on a publisher-by-publisher basis, and players may have to manually apply for upgrades to the next-generation console (at least for some upcoming EA games). However, given the number of prominent games already scheduled for free PS5 enhancements, both PS4 and Xbox One players will likely enjoy plenty of forward compatibility once the new consoles are released.
