RIP Flash Player: Adobe says you have this many times to uninstall the app

Putting the final nail in Flash Player's coffin, Adobe recommends and urges users to remove the Flash multimedia plug-in from their web browsers and uninstall the standalone Flash Player desktop application by the end of the year.

Adobe confirmed in an update posted earlier this month on its End of Support page for Flash Player that it will remind users to uninstall Flash by December 31 of this year.

"Adobe will not issue updates or security patches for Flash Player after the EOL date. We encourage all users to uninstall Flash Player before the EOL date," the blog states.

"Later this year, Adobe will urge users to uninstall Flash Player, and after the EOL date, Flash-based content will no longer run on Adobe Flash Player.

To uninstall Flash, Adobe has published a how-to guide for Windows and Mac users.

Adobe will not only stop updating Flash Player by the end of the year, but will also remove the install link and stop content from using the application once the EOL expires.

"Adobe will remove the Flash Player download page from the site and Flash-based content will not be able to run on Adobe Flash Player after the EOL date," the company explained.

"Adobe always recommends using the latest supported software; after the EOL date, Flash Player will no longer be supported by Adobe and customers should not use Flash Player."

Adobe also urged users not to download Flash Player applications from third parties.

"Customers should not use unauthorized versions of Flash Player. Unauthorized downloads are a common source of malware and viruses. Adobe assumes no responsibility for unauthorized versions of Flash Player. 19]

However, Adobe will continue to support Flash before the EOL deadline. The company stated that it "will continue to issue regular security patches for Flash Player, maintain OS and browser compatibility, and add features and capabilities as determined by Adobe through the end of 2020."

Since announcing plans to phase out Flash in 2017, Adobe has been working with companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Mozilla to prepare for its eventual demise.
