iOS 14 Shocker reveals new name and last minute features

Just days before iOS 14 debuts at WWDC 2020, Apple may be making a major name change to its mobile operating system.

This rumored name change to iPhone OS was shared by notorious Apple leaker Jon Prosser via Twitter and will bring the iPhone OS brand name in line with Apple's other devices. While this move could have been predicted based on the debut of the iPadOS last year, this is the first time we have confirmation of what the software shipping with the iPhone 12 will be called.

When Apple first announced its own mobile software, it was actually called iPhone OS. In fact, it remained that way until Apple announced iOS 4 and chose an abbreviation.

At the time, the rebranding was a big deal. And now, with the release of the 14th version of the iPhone's new features and revamped interface just around the corner, its resurgence is almost astounding. Again, while somewhat expected, rebranding a major operating system after more than a decade is nothing to sneeze at.

The iPhone OS (stylistically perhaps iPhoneOS) will join the naming protocols of macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS. iPhone OS will join the macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS naming protocols

. Along with the name change, new changes reportedly coming to the mobile platform include a convenient multitasking interface with a list view of apps and the ability to assign a default app.

Some last-minute leaked information also teased some additional upgrades.9to5Mac reported that Apple's Podcasts app will get a major refresh that will borrow Apple Music's "For You" tab, which will make your to be able to offer more personalized recommendations based on your listening history. And another leak reported by AppleInsider indicates that Apple's long-rumored sound effects for the AirTags item tracker have been spotted within iOS 14.

There may also be a refresh of the Health app or the launch of a dedicated Fitness app that will work with the new Apple Watch Series 6 and other compatible fitness trackers to provide insight into wellness goals.

At Monday's WWDC, Apple may announce iOS 14 as iPhone OS 14.
