HTC U20 5G Can Fight OnePlus Z for Affordable Android Crown

HTC, once the leading manufacturer of Android phones, has not released a notable handset for some time. But that may soon change, as the company just pulled the covers off its first 5G handset, the HTC U20 5G.

The HTC U20 5G is a mid-range device that is more likely to clash with the OnePlus Nord (or OnePlus Z) than to take on high-end flagships like the Galaxy S20 or iPhone 11 Pro.

With a 6.8-inch LCD display with FHD+ resolution, a Snapdragon 765G chipset and 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery, the HTC U20 5G is perfectly decent mid-class specs. However, the quad camera array on the back could make it stand out in the mid-range segment.

The camera setup consists of a 48MP main camera, an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro sensor. This makes the HTC U20 5G a fairly comprehensive rear camera array that allows for a variety of phone photography modes, from expensive wide shots to full-blown close-ups with a macro lens.

Like the upcoming Pixel 4a, the HTC U20 5G uses a punch-hole selfie camera (32 MP lens) and a nearly bezel-less display. This results in a rather attractive looking device with a curved back that is not unlike the OnePlus 8 Pro. Speaking of the back, HTC does not seem to be interested in a fingerprint scanner under the display, as the back is equipped with a fingerprint scanner.

The HTC U20 5G is only available in Taiwan for now, with no word on pricing in the US or UK. However, if it does go on sale, it will likely compete with another upcoming phone.

The OnePlus Nord is expected to have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in addition to the Snapdragon 765G, with fairly similar specifications. This is roughly equivalent to the HTC U20 5G, but the OnePlus Nord is also rumored to have up to 12GB of RAM.

The rear camera array is also similar, with the OnePlus Nord expected to have a 64MP main lens, a 16MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2MP macro lens. The selfie camera will be 16MP. Despite the megapixel differences, the camera setups are still fairly similar, and much of the performance offered by such a setup will likely come from the software the phone uses to take pictures.

Where the OnePlus Nord may have an advantage is its 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a punch-hole selfie camera, which may have a 90Hz refresh rate. And while the battery is small, the OnePlus Nord is expected to feature Warp Charge 30T charging, which promises to fill up the battery at a significantly faster rate than other regular cell phone chargers.

The OnePlus Nord is tentatively scheduled to arrive in July. So if the HTC U20 5G arrives around the same time, there could be a new battle in the mini-range Android arena.
