A new update to Windows 10, also known as Windows 10 May 2020 or Windows 10 2004, has been blocked by Microsoft from certain devices for good reason. That latest bug has been acknowledged by Microsoft, but there is still no solution.

However, if you actually see this flaw, don't worry, it doesn't mean that your monitor has actually gone the way of the dodo.

According to a post on Microsoft's support forum, external displays connected to a PC running Windows 10 version 2004 may go black when attempting to use the drawing function. This occurs both in Microsoft's own Office apps and in "other apps that allow drawing, such as Whiteboard."

To troubleshoot and see if this is happening on your system, open Device Manager (click on the Start menu, type "Device Manager" and select it) and under Display Adapters, click !

Microsoft has not given a deadline for when this bug will be resolved, but has stated that they are "working to fix this issue in a future version of the operating system."

To get the external display working again, simply reboot the system. But you will want to do more than just fix the screen; you will want to get your productivity back.

There are multiple options to address and work around this issue, starting with the simple method of not using the drawing feature in Windows 10 apps. Creators who connect their laptops to an external monitor and use a WACOM tablet to draw will not be happy with that idea.

So, my advice on this matter is to roll back the Windows 10 2004 Update. Do not skip step one, backing up the system, as there is always inherent risk with system-level changes such as this.
