The biggest change for the Mac in more than a decade may be just weeks away. Apple will reportedly announce plans to make its own processors for Mac computers at its WWDC 2020 conference on June 22. And Intel will be sidelined.

As Bloomberg reported, Apple wants to give developers enough time to adjust before the release of new Macs with Apple's own chips in 2021. However, the timing of the announcement could change.

The new processor is reportedly based on the same technology used in the iPhone and iPad; the A13 Bionic in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro is the fastest chip in cell phones, and the A12Z in the iPad Pro Bionic is faster than many of the best laptops, so this is good news.

According to early leaks, the A14 Bionic chip that will be used in the iPhone 12 could be as powerful as the current CPU in the MacBook Pro. Also, based on a 5-nanometer process, this chip should be more efficient than any chip in Intel's stable.

However, since the new MacBook processors are based on ARM technology, software developers will need time to ensure app compatibility. Apple has also brought iPad apps to the Mac platform, showing how easy it is for developers to port from mobile devices to Mac computers.

As Bloomberg points out, Apple has been working with Intel on Mac processors since 2005. And even though Apple only accounts for 10% of the PC market, this move may accelerate the move away from Intel by other brands. [For example, the Surface Pro X uses an ARM-based SQ1 processor co-developed by Microsoft and Qualcomm. Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Tab S7 is also expected to use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 processor.

Apple reportedly decided to move away from Intel after testing ARM-based Macs revealed performance differences with Intel chips, especially in graphics, AI, and battery life.

The move to ARM will also allow Apple to create thinner and lighter designs. The 13-inch MacBook Pro, for example, has had the same chassis for several years. And it is heavier and thicker than many Windows-based competitors. Perhaps Apple was waiting for these new chips to arrive to make a larger design change.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is reportedly working on three proprietary Mac processors. And the first one will be based on the A14 chip found in the iPhone 12. The system on this chip will include a CPU, a GPU, and a neural engine for machine learning and AI.

After all, when it comes to Apple, the barriers are thick for Intel. And we can't wait to see the next wave of Macs that will come from these new chips, as Apple adopts other new technologies like the mini LED display for the MacBook.
