The iPhone 12 is going to be a pretty exciting looking phone, but even the brightest minds at Apple may have a hard time coming up with a design as creative as the newly released concept work for the future product.

Industrial designer Louis Berger (via Creative Bloq) has unveiled his new "Mosiac" concept on his portfolio site. While not explicitly meant to be an Apple product, the colors, lines, fonts, software design, and other elements all have a distinctly Cupertino feel.

The basic idea is to turn the rear camera module of a smartphone into a removable, self-contained unit that can be slotted into different bodies.

The camera module, or "Photo Tile" as Burger named it, would include all the expected camera sensors, plus a small rear display with circular cutouts for notifications and Apple Watch-style complications, a pressure-sensitive bezel, a working s built-in CPU and battery.

Attaching this module to the large and small "display tiles" not only extends battery life, but also increases the size of the display and adds CPU power for the larger version.

They can also be used as shutter buttons by connecting accessories such as earphones or smartwatches. Display tiles can also be attached to other items such as pendants, clips, watch bands, etc., so they can be easily worn instead of stored in a pocket.

We can certainly see how this would be attractive to some users. Currently, cell phones are getting larger every year, with few devices having screens smaller than 6 inches. Offering a smartphone-like experience in a peripheral-sized casing, with the option of additional features and screen space if needed, is a problem that has also seen the rise of foldable phones like Samsung's Galaxy Fold, Motorola's Razr (2020), and the Galaxy Z Flip This is an interesting solution to the problem, and an attempt to maximize display size while keeping the phone compact.

Apple itself has not yet made a foldable phone, but a number of patents indicate that the company is thinking about it. The next big iPhone, the iPhone 12, which will be released this fall, will not be foldable, but rumors suggest that along with an improved camera, a new A14 chipset, an OLED display, and 5G, it will be the smallest full-screen iPhone ever, at 5.4 inches and and the largest 6.8-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max.
