Can I get HBO Max for free? What HBO and AT&T Subscribers Need to Know

"Can I get HBO Max for free if I already have HBO?" That's the question you and a million others are asking right now with the launch of HBO Max.

Warner Media's new streaming service doesn't communicate its availability and accessibility well, leaving us wondering about the difference between HBO Max vs. HBO Go vs. HBO Now and the list of devices that can download the HBO Max app.

Additionally, HBO Max surprised everyone by introducing a free 7-day trial for new subscribers on launch day. Previously, the company had offered a free trial with a reservation discount deal (now expired) only to select AT&T wireless and Internet customers. Now, however, anyone can get a free trial of HBO Max for one week, after which they will pay a monthly fee of $14.99. Details are discussed below.

Those who already subscribe to HBO through their cable provider can probably watch HBO Max for free; midway through HBO Max's first day, the service announced that a deal with Comcast (which has its own streaming service at Peacock and may have played hardball) announced that it had completed the process.

If you get HBO through one of these cable providers, you automatically get HBO Max:

HBO NOW is HBO's standalone streaming service for digital subscribers. Subscribers to HBO NOW through certain partners automatically get HBO Max for free.

On May 27, your HBO NOW app should automatically update to the HBO Max app on supported devices (if you have automatic updates turned on). All you have to do is sign in with your HBO NOW email and password and choose to access all of HBO Max.

If you get HBO NOW through one of these digital platforms, you will automatically get HBO Max:

Good news! If you subscribe to HBO through Hulu or YouTube TV, you get HBO Max for free.

At this time, you cannot get HBO Max on Roku or Amazon. Warner Media has not yet signed a contract with these two companies, which manufacture the best streaming devices on the market.

If you subscribe to HBO NOW via Roku or Amazon Prime Video Channels, you can continue to access and watch it. However, it will not automatically become an HBO Max app or download another HBO Max.
