Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 release date just leaked — and it's later than we thought

The Galaxy Fold 2 may debut this summer alongside Samsung's Galaxy Note 20. However, we may have to wait a bit before we can purchase Samsung's second attempt at a foldable phone that opens like a book.

Here's what we do know. It is widely assumed that the next Samsung product event will be an online-only event that will showcase the phone maker's upcoming phablet, the Note 20, and several other products. One of the expected announcements is the Galaxy Note 2, the follow-up to the foldable phone that debuted last year. New rumors suggest that August 5 is the date for Samsung's big product announcement.

But wait a minute: just because the Galaxy Fold 2 may debut at the same time as the Note 20 doesn't mean that both phones will be released at the same time. Leaker Max Weinbach, the architect of many Fold 2 rumors, has tweeted that the foldable phone could appear in mid-September.

Weinbach is basing what he calls his "guess" on several code indications that software builds of the Galaxy Fold 2 have begun. The timing of these builds makes it unlikely that the Fold 2 will be ready to ship at the same time as Samsung's announcement.

That software build hints at another possible feature of the Galaxy Fold 2. The code specifically mentions Verizon, which could mean that the Fold 2 can connect to Verizon's faster mmWave-based network. Weinbach wonders if the Galaxy Fold 2 will be unlocked only by Verizon or if wireless carriers will offer the device.

The Galaxy Fold 2 is rumored to feature a larger display on both the inside and outside of the phone, and a Snapdragon 865 chipset appears to power the device; the Fold 2 will likely adopt the camera setup of the Galaxy S20, Samsung is reportedly planning to add an S Pen to its foldable lineup.
