The design of the iPhone13 kills the notch and adds USB-C, but don't get too excited

A prototype of the iPhone 13 has reportedly leaked. However, while this 5.5-inch device looks interesting, one prominent leaker has already denied the accuracy of this report.

The original source was MacOtakara, which reported that a 3D printed mockup of the iPhone 13 supposedly shows what the iPhone will look like in 2021. The leaker, Jon Prosser, responded to the story on Twitter with a fantastically blunt answer: "lol no."

MacOtakara claims that these 3D printed designs came from a source at online retailer Alibaba. This particular model has a 5.5-inch display and is said to be the successor to this year's smallest iPhone 12, which is 5.4 inches, according to leaked information.

The most obvious change here is the absence of the front camera notch, which was present from the iPhone X to the iPhone 11 and is expected to appear on the iPhone 12. MacOtakara suggests that instead there will be a selfie camera below the display and a lower screen He suggests that the camera may be mounted at the bottom of the screen.

Samsung, Oppo, and Xiaomi are considering this technology for their 2021 phones. However, we would be surprised if Apple adopts this new technology anytime soon.

If Apple were to move the camera below the display, we would have to consider how that would affect Face ID. The infrared sensor might be placed in the aforementioned lower camera, or Apple might adopt a fingerprint scanner under the display like many rivals. However, Apple will not abandon Face ID.

Photos of the bottom of the mockup show that the Lightning connector has been replaced with a more standard USB-C connector. This contradicts other rumors claiming that the iPhone 13 will be Apple's first portless phone, and that the company is trying to avoid using USB-C on the iPhone.

The back of the phone appears to have a very odd camera bump with five small holes; MacOtakara explains that this is most likely a modular system to allow designers to more easily test multiple camera designs. iPhone 13 camera array Rumors regarding the iPhone 12 Pro seem to be split on whether it will have four cameras, as the iPhone 12 Pro is expected to have, or whether Apple will try to add more sensors outside the main square patch.

MacOtakara notes that this is only a prototype model, so if there really is an iPhone 13, it could be very different from the actual iPhone 13. However, the fact that this prototype is so different from other leaks we have heard makes it hard to believe.

There is still over a year until we can see the iPhone 13 debut in the fall of 2021. However, the iPhone 12 is expected to be unveiled around September or October of this year.

For the iPhone 12, there are four different models, 5G connectivity, OLED displays (120 Hz refresh rate on the Pro model), a new A14 chipset, camera placement (two rear cameras on the iPhone 12 and 12 Max, two rear cameras on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have four cameras, including a LiDAR sensor as seen on the iPad Pro 2020), and more than next year's models.
